For the Best Photos, the Preparation Doesn’t Start the Night Before

We all want to look and feel our best on the day of a photo shoot! Here are some tips I’ve learned over the years working as a professional photographer, photo editor, and model myself on how to help look and feel your best on the big day. Some of these I learned from the results I got, some from other photographers, and some from conversations with professional make-up artists and hair stylists.

If you want the BEST photos, honestly, I’ve learned for my own work on the modeling side, you have to take care of yourself.

If you want glowing, radiant skin and bright sharp eyes and stunning hair, you need to start BEFORE you sit down in the hair stylist or makeup artist’s chair. In fact, taking excellent care of yourself a week before the shoot drastically improves the outcome of your images, and if you prep with proper water intake, great nutrition, plenty of rest, and regular exercise a month before, this gives the best results overall.

Destress the week of the shoot, especially the night before. Whatever that means for you, indulge in it. Whether it’s relaxing in a soothing shower or tub and chilling out to a favorite movie, or treating yourself to a nice dinner and entertainment, do it. Showing yourself the best form of self love and care that you respond to boosts your self-esteem and really makes you shine in a photograph.

I usually have a little mini spa day when I’m on the modeling side to pamper myself. It helps me make sure I am ready for the shoot from head to toe, gives me time to pack items I’ll need, and relax with tea and meditation after a good meal and relaxing day straight to a full night’s sleep.

The less stressed you are, the more restful your sleep will be. You’ll approach your shoot day with less anxiety if you treat yourself right the day before, and you will be excited and look forward to it rather than feel nervous.
