2017 The Vulva Empowerment Project: Acrylic

In 2017 I created a series of paintings of vulvas in rainbow colors. The story behind the collection was multifold:

  • I found out that most straight women had no idea they all looked unique
  • I was dealing with some internalized homophobia
  • I was working through some internalized misogyny about my own body
  • I had recently re-read V (fka Eve) Ensler’s THE VAGINA MONOLOGUES and was inspired by the portion where women reported what theirs would wear

Initially I felt ridiculous making it, did it as therapy and self-empowerment… and to my surprise, women RESPONDED.

Straight, bi, gay… cis, trans, nonbinary…

Almost every one who learned about the project wanted to see the full collection in person in a gallery on a women’s only night.

The collection expands (and contracts, as these pieces sell)… but when I find the right venue, I would love to do this.
